Samuels' Resilience Amidst Online Backlash
Ailava Samuels, the young representative of Fiji in the upcoming Miss Pacific Islands Pageant, exudes composure despite the online criticism she has faced. At just 19 years old, she remains steadfast, focusing on her journey and the unwavering support from her family, team, and the pageant committee.
"Everyone is entitled to their own feelings and opinions, and they have the freedom to express them," Ms. Samuels stated. "As a young woman, I won't pretend it's easy."
However, she emphasizes that the support she has received empowers her. "With the backing from my team, family, and the committee, I feel confident and at peace."
Ms. Samuels acknowledges the emotional nature of public reactions in Fiji but credits community loyalty for helping her navigate criticism. "Fijians, like many, speak and act out of emotion, and that's acceptable."
She adds, "But the way we convey our points is what needs improvement."
The reigning Miss Pacific Islands, Litara Loma Leilani Ieremia-Allan of Samoa, offered valuable advice. She encouraged Ms. Samuels to embrace loyalty as a fundamental Pacific value. "The positive support I've received from my family and supporters drowns out any negativity I encounter."
Ms. Samuels is encouraged and empowered to make the best decisions, and she feels honored to have this opportunity. The Miss Pacific Islands Pageant will take place in Fiji, at Prince Charles Park in Nadi, from February 13th to 20th.
