Bold opening: When diplomacy frays, travelers feel the first heat—and this Lunar New Year, Chinese tourists are voting with their feet by skipping Japan in large numbers.
Chinese visitors to Japan have sharply declined, dropping out of the top 10 overseas destinations for Lunar New Year travel as a diplomatic rift deepens. The fall follows a period of tense exchanges between Tokyo and Beijing over Taiwan's security, pushing Chinese tourism to a near halt in December compared with a year earlier. A weaker yen had previously been supporting a tourism surge in Japan, but the current tensions have outweighed those gains.
The situation unfolded after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested that Japan’s self-defense forces could be deployed if China moved to invade Taiwan. China regards Taiwan as a part of its territory and has pledged to reunify it, even by force if necessary. Takaichi’s comments sparked strong reactions from China, where officials urged Chinese tourists and students to avoid Japan during the ongoing dispute.
Amid the controversy, South Korea is anticipated to take the lead as the preferred overseas destination for Chinese travelers during the roughly 40-day travel window, with around 250,000 visitors expected—an increase of about 50% from the prior year.
According to reports, Japan is likely to receive fewer Chinese visitors than other regional destinations such as Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Russia. Forecasts suggest Lunar New Year travel to Japan could fall by as much as 60% year-on-year.
The Taiwan dispute has intensified since Takaichi told lawmakers in November that military involvement could be an option if a crisis in the Taiwan Strait posed an existential threat to Japan. Her stance has drawn further criticism from China, including remarks from Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the Munich Security Conference accusing Japan of reviving militarism. He warned that peace-loving nations should caution Japan against stepping back onto that path, or risk self-destruction.
Japan lodged diplomatic protests and rejected Wang’s claims as unfounded, stressing that its defense enhancements respond to a deteriorating security environment and are not aimed at any particular country. Tokyo also pointed out that several countries are expanding their military capabilities non-transparently, which Japan opposes.
China’s special representative on Korean peninsula affairs, Liu Xiaoming, escalated rhetoric by insisting Takaichi’s remarks reveal Japan’s lingering militarist ambitions toward Taiwan and even comparing current tensions to historical episodes. He cautioned that history’s lessons must be heeded; otherwise, he warned, tragedy could repeat itself.
Beijing has repeatedly warned travelers about safety risks in Japan, though there have been few, if any, incidents targeting Chinese tourists. A recent caution followed a fatal stabbing in Osaka in a popular tourist district; Chinese authorities urged nationals to reconsider travel, even as the incident did not involve Chinese individuals.
Public sentiment remains divided. Some individuals advocate for goodwill and travel as a bridge between ordinary people across borders, while others echo the official advisory with cautious optimism about future normalization. One traveler from Shanghai continues to plan a family trip to Japan, arguing that travel advisories often critique a nation rather than reflect the everyday experiences of travelers.
