A former Michigan football coach, Sherrone Moore, has been charged with three crimes after authorities detailed the sequence of events that followed his firing this week. The arraignment on Friday revealed a third-degree home invasion charge along with two misdemeanors: stalking in a domestic relationship and breaking and entering. Moore’s bond was set at $25,000.
The court appearance, conducted via video, showed Moore answering routine questions in a restrained demeanor while wearing a white jumpsuit and folding his hands in his lap. Prosecutors outlined a troubling timeline: after his termination for cause related to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, Moore allegedly forced his way into the former staff member’s apartment, uttered alarming statements, and threatened self-harm. The allegations include Moore grabbing knives and scissors from a kitchen drawer and making fatalistic threats directed at the woman, who he had known personally for several years and who had recently ended their relationship.
Moore is married with three children. The breakup allegedly triggered a flurry of missed calls and messages from him, which the woman reported to university officials. The school had previously begun exploring a tip about the relationship but could not confirm it at that time. After the woman provided information and supporting evidence, Michigan discharged Moore for cause, a move that avoids his nearly $12.3 million remaining contract payout.
Authorities said the situation escalated when Moore allegedly entered the victim’s apartment uninvited, prompting her to contact the police. The assistant prosecutor described Moore’s actions as a sequence of highly threatening and intimidating behaviors. As part of his bond, Moore is required to wear a GPS monitor, avoid any contact with the victim, and stay away from the victim’s residence. A probable cause conference is scheduled for January 22.
Moore’s defense team declined to discuss where he will reside after release or his mental state beyond noting that Moore had undergone a mental health evaluation, which reportedly cleared him for return to law enforcement custody. The defense attorney also indicated that Moore’s state of mind would be addressed in due course.
This case highlights a contentious dispute surrounding Moore’s dismissal and the seriousness of the charges as prosecutors pursue the facts laid out in court.
