Get ready for an exhilarating journey with Forza Horizon 6, as we dive into the captivating world of Japan! This highly anticipated game promises an immersive experience like no other.
During today's Developer_Direct, we got an exclusive glimpse into the making of Forza Horizon 6, which brings the vibrant landscapes of Japan to life. We had the pleasure of chatting with Design Director Torben Ellert, who shared his insights on crafting this incredible game.
Forza Horizon 6 is set to release on multiple platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, Steam, and even PlayStation 5 later in 2026. It's an Xbox Play Anywhere title, ensuring accessibility for all players.
But here's where it gets interesting...
In Forza Horizon 6, you embark on your journey as a tourist with a dream - to attend the prestigious Horizon Festival in Japan. It's a unique twist compared to previous Horizon games, where you typically start as a rising star in the racing world. This fresh approach makes the game appealing not just to car enthusiasts, but to anyone chasing their dreams.
Torben Ellert explains, "It's about that sense of discovery and motivation. You're a fan with a dream, and the game asks, 'What would it take for you to pursue that dream?'"
Forza Horizon 6 takes you on a thrilling adventure through Japan's stunning mountains and vibrant urban spaces. The team has meticulously designed breathtaking vistas, neon-lit city plazas, and industrial docklands, creating an impressive and authentic experience.
"It's not about recreating every detail, but capturing the essence of Japan," Ellert says. "It's about the feel of driving through Tokyo, the skyscrapers, and the surprises around every corner."
The game's sprawling map is divided into distinct districts, each with its own unique charm. From the narrow streets of the suburbs to the iconic downtown area with its iconic landmarks, every corner of Japan is brought to life.
"Tokyo is an ultra-high-density space, a radical departure from anything we've built before," Ellert adds.
But it's not just about the stunning visuals; Forza Horizon 6 also immerses you in Japanese culture. You'll be joined by two close friends, Jordy and Mei, who bring their passion for motorsports and Japanese car building, respectively.
Playground Games' Cultural Consultant, Kyoko Yamashita, ensured an authentic representation of Japan, providing an insider's perspective.
"Having someone who knows the place is invaluable," Ellert explains. "It adds that extra layer of authenticity."
One of the game's standout features is the Collection Journal, inspired by Japan's rich stamp collecting history. Players can build a digital collection of mementos discovered throughout their journey, adding a personal touch to their adventure.
"It's a visual representation of your journey through Japan," Ellert says.
Forza Horizon 6 also introduces The Estate, a customizable space where players can build their own hideaways or tracks. It's inspired by the Japanese concept of Akiya, abandoned rural properties that are often refurbished and given new life.
"The Estate is about community and responsibility," Ellert explains. "It's your chance to refurbish a meaningful space."
Car Meets, another feature inspired by Japanese car culture, adds a social element to the game. Players can gather at three permanent meet locations, including the Horizon Festival and Daikoku, to check out cars, download custom designs, and even purchase their favorites.
With over 550 cars at launch, including the stunning 2025 GR GT Prototype and 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser, Forza Horizon 6 offers an extensive vehicle roster. The cover cars are beautifully showcased in the key art, inspired by Japan's contrasting elements and influenced by traditional Sumi-E ink paintings.
"Cars are more than just vehicles; they're a reflection of our dreams and aspirations," Ellert says. "They represent freedom, beauty, and community."
Forza Horizon 6 is all about giving players the freedom to explore, discover, and create their own racing legends. It's an open-world driving experience like no other, and we can't wait to see you on the roads of Japan!
Mark your calendars for May 19th, when Forza Horizon 6 launches on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, and Steam. Premium Edition players can enjoy Early Access starting May 15th.
