Measles Alert: Are You at Risk? Uncover the Facts and Protect Yourself!

Measles is on the rise in the Illawarra, Shoalhaven, and Southern Highlands regions, and it's a serious concern. This highly contagious disease, preventable through vaccination, is spreading through the air, affecting those nearby when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

But here's the catch: even if you haven't been in direct contact with someone who has measles, you could still be at risk. NSW Health warns that being in the same location as an infected person can lead to infection, and with 14 cases already this year, the threat is real.

Who's most vulnerable? Those with weakened immune systems, individuals who haven't had measles before, unvaccinated people, pregnant women, and infants are particularly susceptible. If you fall into any of these categories, take note!

Exposure sites and times:
- Blue Jay Cafe, Albion Park: Feb 11, 11:05 AM - 11:50 AM
- Bean Roasted Espresso Bar, Calderwood: Feb 11, 10:55 AM - 11:35 AM
- Robertson Supermarket and Bottleshop: Feb 10, 2:20 PM - 2:50 PM
- Southern Rise Bakery, Robertson: Feb 10, 1:40 PM - 2:40 PM
- Fitzroy Falls Souvenir Shop: Feb 10, 1:00 PM - 1:40 PM
- Fitzroy Falls: Feb 10, 12:25 PM - 1:45 PM

If you've been to any of these places at the specified times, take action! Monitor your health for 18 days after the potential exposure. Symptoms to watch for include fever, runny nose, sore eyes, and a cough, followed by a distinctive red rash. And this is the part most people miss: the rash typically appears 3-4 days after the initial symptoms.

What should you do if you suspect exposure? Seek medical advice immediately. Call your doctor or health service in advance to inform them of your potential measles contact, and wear a face mask when visiting. If you're unvaccinated and it's been less than three days since the exposure, or if you're pregnant, immunocompromised, or have an exposed infant (less than six days since exposure), contact your local Public Health Unit at 1300 066 055.

But here's where it gets controversial... Even immune individuals can sometimes develop mild symptoms. NSW Health reported four new cases, three of which were locally acquired, and two linked to earlier NSW cases. The source of the third local case remains a mystery. The fourth case is a traveler returning from South East Asia, a region currently battling measles outbreaks.

Dr. Christine Selvey, Director of Communicable Diseases NSW, urges everyone to stay vigilant. "Even if you haven't visited the listed exposure sites, be alert for symptoms, especially if you develop a rash a few days after early symptoms."

The measles vaccine is your shield! It can prevent the disease, even after exposure, if administered promptly. Dr. Selvey reminds us, "Everyone should ensure they are vaccinated, especially before traveling overseas, as measles is rampant in many parts of the world." The MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, is safe and free for children and those born after 1965 who need their two doses.

Are you protected? If you were born after 1965, have you received both doses of the measles vaccine? If not, it's time to take action. And for parents, consider vaccinating infants under 12 months early if traveling overseas, after consulting a GP.

Stay informed, stay protected. Measles is a serious disease, but with awareness and timely action, we can keep our communities safe.
