Mickens' impact at Notre Dame began in 2020, where he quickly established himself as a master talent developer. In his first season, he guided cornerback Nick McCloud to All-ACC Third Team recognition. The following year, Mickens transformed Clarence Lewis and Cam Hart into full-time starters, further solidifying his reputation as a top coach.
His most impressive early work came in 2022, when Benjamin Morrison, a June enrollee, emerged as a Freshman All-American—a feat that hadn't been achieved by Notre Dame since 2012. This achievement marked a significant milestone in Mickens' career.
Promotions and National Recognition
Following that successful season, Mickens was promoted to secondary coach and defensive pass game coordinator. In 2023, Notre Dame's pass defense ranked among the nation's best, allowing just 5.4 yards per attempt and ranking near the top in total passing yards allowed. This consistent excellence continued in 2024, where Mickens developed Leonard Moore into another Freshman All-American, earning him the FWAA Freshman Defensive Player of the Year and College Football Network Freshman Cornerback of the Year honors.
The Rise of Xavier Watts and the Crown Jewel: Sauce Gardner
Mickens was also instrumental in the rise of Xavier Watts, who became a two-time second-team consensus All-American. Over the two seasons Mickens worked closely with the safety group, Watts recorded 13 interceptions. The pinnacle of Mickens' résumé is undoubtedly 'Sauce' Gardner, whom he helped earn Freshman All-American status at Cincinnati before Gardner's stellar NFL Draft performance, becoming the fourth overall pick in 2022.
