MTA Winter Storm Service Updates: What to Expect on January 25-26, 2026 (2026)

Winter Storm Alert: Navigating MTA Services on January 25-26, 2026

A significant winter storm is on its way, and it's time to prepare for potential disruptions to your travel plans. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the upcoming changes to MTA services.

Updated: January 24, 2026, 1:33 a.m.

Our team is already hard at work, salting outdoor station areas, deploying specialized equipment, and closely monitoring switches and tracks to ensure your safety.

But here's where it gets controversial: while we aim to maintain service, there will be adjustments to subways, buses, the Long Island Rail Road, and Metro-North Railroad this weekend. Your safety is our utmost priority, and we encourage you to consider alternative travel options during the storm's peak on Sunday and Monday.

If traveling is necessary, remember these crucial tips:

  • Allow ample time for your journey.
  • Exercise extreme caution, especially on stairs, platforms, and when boarding or exiting.
  • Stay informed by checking service status on the MTA or TrainTime apps, or our website.
  • Feel free to chat with our team via our apps for any service-related queries.

Stay safe, and thank you for choosing MTA.

Subway Updates:
Some express trains will make local stops this weekend to accommodate the winter storm. Many planned service changes have been canceled, so be sure to check the Weekender for the complete list of adjustments.

Buses:
Expect longer wait times for local buses. We're taking proactive measures by applying snow chains to some buses before the storm and removing articulated buses from service during the storm.

Long Island Rail Road (LIRR):
The LIRR will operate on a modified Sunday schedule. Please note the following changes:
- No service between Ronkonkoma and Greenport.
- Reduced Babylon Branch service with no direct trains to or from Grand Central.

Additionally, the following planned service changes have been proactively canceled for this weekend and into next week:
- Brooklyn weekend service suspension
- Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, Woodside westbound weekend bypassing
- Montauk weekday overnight busing
- Elmont-UBS Arena, Queens Village, Hollis midday westbound bypassing on Monday

Metro-North Railroad:
Metro-North will provide hourly service on the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven lines on Sunday. The New Canaan, Danbury, and Waterbury branches will follow their regular weekend schedules.

West of Hudson service on the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines will be temporarily suspended beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Stay updated by visiting NJTransit's website.

On Monday, trains will operate on a Saturday schedule with additional rush hour trains. Refer to the TrainTime app for detailed information.

Remember, your safety is our priority. Stay informed, and we'll get through this winter storm together!
