The Perth Bears have officially revealed their logo as they prepare to make their debut in the National Rugby League (NRL) in 2027 – a moment that marks the beginning of a new chapter in Australian rugby league history. But here's where it gets controversial: this logo not only symbolizes their future but also carries deep ties to their historic roots.
In a move that has generated excitement and pride across the rugby community, the Perth Bears introduced their new emblem, crafted by Dave Carnovale, a dedicated supporter of the North Sydney Bears and a talented graphic designer. This design pays tribute to the legendary North Sydney club while boldly embracing the club’s ambitions in Western Australia.
Perth Bears CEO Anthony De Ceglie emphasized the significance of the logo, explaining that it honors the heritage of the North Sydney Bears while signaling a forward-looking vision for rugby league in Western Australia. He mentioned, "The Perth Bears are the most thrilling story in Australian sport right now. We’ve taken our time to craft something truly meaningful." He further clarified that although the club is new to the scene, its roots are firmly planted in North Sydney, which remains the spiritual home of the Bears in rugby league.
De Ceglie also expressed confidence that the new emblem symbolizes something both North Sydney supporters and Western Australian fans can rally behind, uniting different fan bases under one shared enthusiasm.
Head Coach Mal Meninga shared his perspective, stating: “This is one club, one family, stretching from coast to coast.” He highlighted that the new logo respects the proud history of the Bears while also embodying the vibrant energy of Western Australia.
The logo has received heartfelt endorsements from rugby league legends Greg Florimo and Billy Moore, both of whom are iconic figures in North Sydney’s history. Florimo remarked, “Great legacies do not fade away; they evolve. Seeing our North Sydney Bear reimagined in Western Australia excites me immensely.” Moore added that the emblem represents every player and supporter who has contributed to the Bears’ storied past, illustrating respect for their origins while confidently pointing toward the future.
Supporting the club’s expansion are Western Reds legend Mark Geyer, who reflected on the growth of rugby league in WA. He said, “A new year brings renewed hope. I’ve seen firsthand how passionately Western Australians have embraced rugby league, especially when their team is supported by the community.”
Regarding the logo’s design, Carnovale explained his goal was to create a respectful evolution of the Bears’ identity. He described it as a symbol that bridges the club’s historic legacy with a modern outlook, ensuring it remains timeless yet forward-focused. Carnovale expressed his pride at witnessing his artwork play a role in such a significant moment, noting, “It’s an incredible honor to contribute to the Bears’ journey into Perth. As the NRL expands globally, I look forward to my sons seeing my work out there in the world.”
Perth Bears Chairman Ben Morton shared the palpable excitement within Western Australia about their upcoming venture into the NRL. He reaffirmed the club’s commitment to honoring the Bears’ rugby league roots while embracing a new era. Morton remarked, “The Perth Bears might be a new organization, but they are built on history. Western Australians now have their own NRL team, and loyal Bears supporters will see their beloved club return to the national stage. This is a proud moment for the entire rugby league community in Western Australia.”
Following this milestone announcement, the club will release a special limited edition merchandise line, available later today on the official Perth Bears website at https://perthbears.com.au/.
