Reform UK's Mixed Reaction to Robert Jenrick's Defection (2026)

The political landscape just got a whole lot more interesting! Robert Jenrick, a former Conservative MP, has defected to Reform UK, and the reaction from the party's members is, to put it mildly, mixed.

Some Reform members are ecstatic, seeing Jenrick as a valuable addition to their ranks. Others, however, are less than thrilled, viewing his arrival as a potential dilution of the party's core values.

One member, James Scott, voiced the frustration of many on a private Facebook group, exclaiming, "Enough already! Reform UK please take note, you are going to lose members and voters if you don’t cap this craziness … We don’t want a Tory party Pt II." This sentiment reflects a fear that Reform UK is becoming too similar to the Conservative party they once opposed.

But here's where it gets controversial... Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, sacked Jenrick and removed the party whip. This move prompted another Reform member to declare, "Don’t do it, Nigel. If Jenrick joins Reform I’m done I am a member of the party but will leave immediately." This illustrates the strong feelings some members have about welcoming a former Tory.

Despite the reservations, many Reform members are welcoming Jenrick with open arms. One member on a private Facebook forum praised Jenrick as a "seasoned veteran of parliament." Paul Rayner, posting on a public group, enthusiastically stated, "Fantastic news !! I am losing count of how many potential great future leaders are now in Reform." This enthusiasm suggests a belief that Jenrick's experience and influence will benefit the party.

The speculation about Jenrick's potential move has been a hot topic within Reform circles for quite some time. The fact that their leader, Nigel Farage, had previously ridiculed Jenrick as “Robert Generic” makes the situation even more intriguing.

Reform's elected representatives on local councils also seem divided. Rory Green, a Reform member of Nottinghamshire county council, acknowledged Jenrick's experience, stating, "He is a barrister and has been on cabinet nationally so that’s positive.” Dawn Justice, another council member, noted that Jenrick was "well liked," but needed to learn more about the defection. Maxwell Harrison, a senior member of Kent county council, delivered a speech in the style of Farage, calling it "a massive moment in our movement’s history."

And this is the part most people miss... While many are celebrating, some members are concerned about the influx of Conservatives. This highlights a fundamental tension within the party: how to balance attracting experienced politicians with maintaining its unique identity.

Zia Yusuf, Reform's head of policy, acknowledged the concerns of grassroots members, stating, "YOU will be prioritised in candidate selection for our next class of MPs, NOT failed former Tory MPs." This suggests an attempt to reassure members that their voices will be heard.

The relationship between Jenrick and Yusuf could be another source of tension. Jenrick previously called for Yusuf to be "the boot," accusing him of liking a post that attacked Jenrick. Yusuf's absence at the unveiling of Jenrick at Reform HQ further fueled speculation about their relationship. Farage's comment about "teaching him forgiveness" adds a layer of complexity to the situation.

What do you think? Will Jenrick's arrival strengthen or weaken Reform UK? Do you agree with the members who welcome him, or do you share the concerns of those who are wary? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
