The story of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a prime example of this. Personally, I find it intriguing how a system as vast and powerful as the AMOC, which regulates our global climate, can be so misunderstood and under-monitored.

The AMOC is like a giant conveyor belt, transporting heat from the southern to the northern Atlantic, and in doing so, it influences our entire civilization. From the food we eat to the infrastructure we build, the AMOC plays a crucial role. Yet, despite its importance, we're not ready for the potential changes it may bring.

The Threat of AMOC Weakening

Under the current climate crisis, the AMOC is projected to weaken, leading to radical weather changes and sea-level rise in Europe. The problem is, we don't know when or how fast this will happen. Different climate models provide varying projections, and the lack of consensus makes it challenging for policymakers to prepare.

What makes this particularly fascinating is the uncertainty surrounding the AMOC's future. Scientists are still improving their models, but the physics of the AMOC remains poorly understood. This uncertainty has real-world implications, affecting everything from food security to coastal planning.

The Risk of Collapse

Worse still, there's a potential for AMOC weakening to turn into a collapse. If this happens, Europe could experience climate change at a rate up to ten times faster than what we're currently witnessing. Considering the challenges we face already, it's hard to imagine the impact of such a rapid change.

The recent scientific debate over whether the AMOC has already weakened adds to the confusion. Many new studies are based on approximations, filling the gap left by a lack of direct historical measurements. This debate, while appearing to be a disagreement, is actually a reflection of the high levels of uncertainty due to data scarcity.

The Need for Long-Term Monitoring

The root of this uncertainty lies in the absence of long-term AMOC observations. We're trying to understand a planetary-scale system with very little direct data. Systematic monitoring only began two decades ago, and the extreme vulnerability of funding for these observations is a cause for concern.

We need to treat the understanding and monitoring of the AMOC as an urgent global priority. It's time for the EU, the UK, and other international partners to collaborate and secure long-term funding for AMOC monitoring. We cannot afford to lose this vital system.
